'Witkacy, Witkacy, and
once more Witkacy. He is such an interesting writer. He should have a
theater devoted to him, and we want to become such a theatre.'
Tadeusz Kantor, 1961
When Tadeusz Kantor created Cricot 2, his early stagings were
of Witkacy plays, such as Matka, The Madman and the Nun, The
Water Hen, and Lovlies and Dowdies - productions that
contributed to the development of his own original style. In turn, he
drew attention to the neglected Witkacy.
'Without Witkacy, modern
Polish avante-garde drama would simply not exist as we know it, nor
would it have the importance and influence in the world that it enjoys
today.' Daniel
