| In Witkacy's plays, or what he
himself called his 'comedies with corpses', characters die and then
return to the stage as if nothing had happened.
Witkacy, too, lives in a perpetual
state of rediscovery: he fades in and out of style. His reputation is
constantly being reborn or challenged. Was he a genius? Or a fraud?
'Witkacy belongs to those creative
artists who despite even considerable popularity during their lifetimes
must be forgotten and discovered all over again after many years because
Witkacy's popularity was connected rather with the eccentricities in his
life and with what in his creative work was least valuable - and not
with his enduring achievements in the realm of ideas and artistic
creation... It will take many years for the legend still alive today to
die out, connected as it is to his character and only then will it be
possible to find the true value of his work.'
Boleslaw Micinski, 1941-42
